Things to know

Many wilderness and hiking areas are remote from services and civilization. You will likely not have cell phone coverage. Always let someone know where you are going, bring plenty of supplies, and know how to recreate responsibly.

Seasons

Check specific hiking destinations for seasonal access. Many locations and their starting trailheads are snowed in during the winter.

Late summer can bring wildfire smoke that can cause adverse health effects. Be prepared to change your itinerary or make plans if smoke and fire cross where you are exploring.

Blue Mountains Trail

This 530-mile spiral route links all seven of Northeast Oregon’s wilderness areas; requires no new trails to be built; limits road walks and bushwhacks; and directly connects hikers to the communities of Joseph, Troy, Tollgate, La Grande, Sumpter, Austin Junction, and John Day with ties to more nearby towns along the route.
