The North Fork John Day River is one of northeastern Oregon’s most important wild river systems, beginning in the high country of the Elkhorn Mountains and flowing through deep forested canyons, alpine tributaries, and protected wilderness before joining the main John Day River farther west. Its upper 54 miles are federally designated Wild and Scenic, recognized for exceptional fish habitat, historic mining landscapes, and backcountry recreation. The river supports wild spring Chinook, steelhead, bull trout, and redband trout, making it one of Oregon’s most ecologically significant cold-water systems.

Hikes in the Elkhorns can be difficult and require skills and preparation. Summers can be hot and dry. Research your route to ensure a successful trip.
