Wallowa Mountains

Welcome to the Oregon Alps

The Wallowas may be the most stunning wilderness landscape that you’ve never visited.

Pristine Beauty and rural charm

In the center of these mountains, the Eagle Cap Wilderness holds mesmerizing alpine lakes that reflect rocky granite peaks dotted with evergreens. An extensive network or trails means you could backpack on foot or pack animal for days and see something new around every ridgeline.

Along the outer perimeter, many stocked lakes and campsites offer drive-in access for those seeking alpine beauty a little closer to civilization. The Hells Canyon Scenic Byway circles the mountains and finally cuts northward as it makes its full loop around the range.

THINGS TO KNOW

Access

Some routes to trailheads are rough or suited only for high-clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicles. Check conditions at the US Forest Service to ensure roads are open.

WEATHER & SEASONS

The Wallowas see heavy snow in the winter, making access to trailheads and scenic wilderness destinations only for the expertly equipped and hardy temperament.

Summer opens everything up, but be prepared for wildfire smoke later in the season.

CALL AHEAD

Some attractions are either run by volunteers or may not be accessible depending on weather or snow conditions. We recommend you call ahead to any museums or sites, or contact the Forest Service for the latest road and trail updates.
