Traverse Lake and Tombstone Lake are remote alpine lakes reached through long wilderness trails in the southern Eagle Cap region. Traverse Lake is especially known for exceptionally clear water, sandy shoreline sections, and dramatic open-basin scenery, while Tombstone Lake sits deeper in a rugged below steep ridgelines. Together they form one of the most rewarding overnight backpacking destinations in Baker for experienced hikers seeking high-elevation solitude.

Hikes into the Eagle Cap Wilderness are difficult and require skills and preparation. Summers can be hot and dry. Research your route to ensure a successful trip.
From Baker City, travel east/southeast toward the West Eagle or Main Eagle trailheads depending on chosen route. Most hikers reach Traverse Lake first via Echo Lake, then continue toward Tombstone Lake over higher alpine passes. Access roads are long forest routes and may require high-clearance vehicles.
