Flagstaff Gallery inside the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center Thursday, November 12th, 2026 through January 31st, 2027
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, the Lone Pine Mercantile and the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center are thrilled to host “Spirit of the West” a curated open regional art show. Featuring artists from Oregon, Idaho and Montana, this show will hang from November 12th through January 31st in the Flagstaff Gallery. An Artist Reception will be held on December 12th from 2pm to 4pm. In addition to oil and acrylic paintings, the exhibit will include ceramic sculpture, fiber art, photography, and mixed media pieces. Most work is available for purchase through the Lone Pine Mercantile. “Spirit of the West” looks to the past with an old wagon wheel embellished with hand cut metal by Steve and Marisa Meyer and a nostalgic view of old architecture, rendered in pencil by Andee Simmons. Clair Kehrberg fashions the Oregon Trail in a leather handbag; a project started during an Artist Residency at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Mary Arnold paints horses being shod and Debra Otterstein exquisitely renders horses wearing western bridles on scratchboard. True western spirit comes from the cowgirls crafted in fiber from Andrea Stone. Ryan Kitson’s monumental ceramic donkey wrapped in barbed wire and Steven Feldman’s acrylics both provoke thought and humor in a different kind of western spirit. Javier Moreno captures that big western sky over unchanged mountains and Claire Remsberg paints water at its most dynamic both styles contrasting the abstracted mixed media horizons of Pam Demo. Also included in these many differing visions of the western landscape are the yellowing aspen of Sandra Degnan and beautiful but humble cityscapes by Sandra Ford. Judith Stoffer brings a traditional palette and perfect technique to the ancient, colorful geography of John Day and Teresa Stearns Uriarte’s nighttime photography of a barn and windmill glow from within. The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center tells the story of westward expansion via the Oregon Trail. That heritage is deeply felt in Eastern Oregon and informs the culture of our community. “Crossroads is thrilled through our Friends Agreement to annually host an exhibition inside the Interpretive Center Flagstaff Gallery. The lovely space allows the viewer the quiet solitude to explore the art. “Spirit of the West” bridges the gap between the past and present into a living dialogue about the West.” Ginger Savage, Executive Director, Crossroads Carnegie Art Center. Come explore the many differing artistic perspectives and how they come together in the Spirit of the West.
Updated Hours: Beginning November 1st, the Interpretive Center will be switch to winter hours. We will be open Wednesday through Sunday, 9am to 4pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission will be free for the month of December.
