Day of Dance was created by Crossroads Board Member Kathy Sanchez, to celebrate dance in all its
many forms, as part of National Dance Day which is celebrated across the country.

“National Dance Day was established in 2010 by American Dance Movement co-founder, Nigel Lythgoe,
and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, National Dance Day is an annual celebration dedicated to
dance, that encourages Americans of all ages to incorporate dance into their lives. By creating a focused day
of celebration to show support for dance as a valuable form of exercise and of artistic expression, American
Dance Movement aims to educate the public about dance and its many benefits, as well as make dance
accessible and inclusive to everyone. American Dance Movement (ADM) believes that participation in
dance connects the mind and body, promotes health and wellbeing, connects us with others and
enables us to find joy through dance and movement. National Dance Day (NDD) is a day of
celebrating dance, in all its forms, and takes place annually on the third Saturday in September.”
This is Crossroads 4 th Day of Dance event and free to all and is great multi-generational event.
Crossroads would appreciate and suggest a $5.00 per person donation to help to continue to pay all
the costs of this event.

Guests need to bring a chair or a blanket and come to enjoy the whole event.

Crossroads has invited numerous food vendors who will be parked on Grove Street including MC
Taco Bus, Celtic Cauldon Kettle Korn, Austin Street Dogs, Mountain Jim Cotton Candy and the Baker
County YMCA (selling drinks). Asian Fusion will also be providing a 10% discount off an order when

presenting the official program. Baker Heritage Museum also has Free Museum Day all day as well.
Crossroads will be selling raffle tickets at the event for fantastic raffle prizes which will fund the 2027
Day of Dance event.

Each year, Crossroads works to welcome new groups to keep the event fresh every year. This year
we are thrilled to welcome Jayanthi Raman Dance Company from Portland, Oregon who are touring
Eastern Oregon.

“Jayanthi Raman is a dancer, choreographer and master artist who has a critically acclaimed and an
extensive and impressive career spanning three decades. Using the Indian classical dance form
Bharatha Natyam as the starting point for her exploration, she creates thought provoking work. Her
contemporary approach to classicism is provocative in our cultural environment. She worked hard to
perform in proscenium theaters, became an educator of repute, and finally a cultural ambassador;
creating a prominent and vital position for Bharatha Natyam and for herself in the world of dance. Her
work sets her apart as a renowned and respected scholar of the art form.

Raman’s work as a choreographer is grounded in the centuries old classical dance form yet draws
inspiration from newer concepts and themes as well as using modern lighting and technology. Her
choreography based in ancient Indian traditions, has been lauded for its deep-rooted classicism as
well as for its aesthetic experimentation and willingness to cross boundaries. Her enthusiasm to take
risks and explore unpredictable and complex movements has established her as an exciting and
groundbreaking choreographer. She has choreographed 25 full length evening works and numerous
solo and group pieces.

Raman has created a unique language that expresses her personal Indo-American identity. Raman
has become a recognized persona in the US, called as a “cultural treasure” (Oregonian) and as a
“world class dancer” and “scholar of dances” (DANCE Magazine). She is reputed as a scholar by the
critics and her peers and as the ‘Gold standard of Indian dance in the region’. As a performer and
choreographer, she is well known for her precise footwork and her eloquent abhinaya -expressive
dance. She has performed numerous solo and thematic performances at reputed dance festivals and
performing art centers in US and internationally with critical acclaim.”

Jayanthi and her dancers will be performing “Devi: Goddess Within Me.” This traditional Indian
dance theater production is grounded on Indian classical traditional dance form Bharatha Natyam
from South India, as well as folk dances which lend itself to innovation seamlessly. Featuring
company repertoire dancers, with lead dancer/choreographer Jayanthi Raman, and visiting
international dancers from Delhi, the production features original music score and poetry drawn from
ancient and contemporary poets.
