Mount Ireland is one of the highest peaks in western Baker County and a classic summit hike in the North Fork John Day Wilderness area. The trail climbs to an active historic fire lookout with panoramic views of Baldy Lake, the Elkhorn Mountains, and distant Wallowa peaks. Mountain goats are frequently spotted near the summit, and the route passes through open ridges, lodgepole forest, and subalpine meadows.

Hikes in the Elkhorns can be difficult and require skills and preparation. Summers can be hot and dry. Research your route to ensure a successful trip.
