About

Peavy Trail (#1640) follows the North Fork John Day River drainage into the North Fork John Day Wilderness, beginning on an old roadbed before climbing steeply through grassy openings, regenerating burn areas, and lodgepole pine stands affected by the 1996 Sloan’s Ridge Fire. The first two miles are relatively gentle, while the upper section becomes steeper with creek crossings, open sagebrush slopes, and broad meadow views near Columbia Hill.

ACTIVITIES

Hiking

Hikes in the Elkhorns can be difficult and require skills and preparation. Summers can be hot and dry. Research your route to ensure a successful trip.
