Paragraph text
The hike up to Burger Pass offers a good introduction to the topography of the southwestern Wallowas. The Elk Creek Trail transitions after a couple of miles to more open slopes. Then there are lovely white granite slopes as you traverse below China Cap, and the views from Burger Pass take in most of the southern Wallowas. There are many options from here for those who are backpacking, but day hikers may want to descend from the pass and extend their outing by taking the Sand Pass Trail to the upper Burger Meadows and Sand Pass itself.

Hikes into the Eagle Cap Wilderness are difficult and require skills and preparation. Summers can be hot and dry. Research your route to ensure a successful trip.
Continue over Burger Pass on the Elk Creek trail and follow it all the way to the Minam River.
From Baker City, drive toward the Buck Creek Trailhead via forest roads west of the Powder River Valley. The hike begins at Buck Creek Trailhead and follows Elk Creek Trail #1944 approximately 4.3 miles one way to Burger Pass.
Mid July through October
